by MAC was launched at the Refugee Forum on 24 June 2009. The Refugee Forum and the DVD
project were to celebrate National Refugee Week and World Refugee Day. The DVD is a
compilation of photographs and short personal stories of 11 young refugees from Sierra Leone,
Sudan and Iraq.
The presentation of this DVD was made at the meeting and copies were made available for
Committee members. DVDs have been distributed to all project participants, community partners
and will be available to other organisations and Council libraries.
It was suggested that the program be promoted to the wider community outside Bankstown /
Canterbury area, and also to provide the DVD to Youth Services for discussion. This DVD will be
promoted at the conference “A Just & Sustainable Region”, organised by the Inner South-West
Community Development Organisation on 25 August 2009.

NILS is a community-managed small loan program developed by the Good Shepherd Youth and
Family service which provides interest-free and fee-free loans to low income earners. The loans
can be used to purchase essential household or medical goods and services.
The Committee suggested that additional information about this program be sought prior to any
recommendation to establish the scheme in Canterbury.
Signage in the Garden of the World
The Committee was briefed on Stage 3 of the Gardens of the World project which was initiated by
this Committee. $32000 has been allocated in the 2009/10 budget to undertake work on Gough
Whitlam Park and also an application for other government funding has been made to aid the
completion of the project. This involves the installation of suitable signage around the Garden and
construction of a sculpture in the centre of the Garden.
Recommendation:
THAT the stage 3 of the Gardens of the World project is noted.
Proposal for a New Committee Pamphlet
The Committee was advised of a proposal for a new Committee pamphlet to be designed and were
asked to provide input. Some of suggestions made by the Committee are the role and purpose of
the Committee, what it does, the achievements of the Committee, ongoing or successful programs
initiated by the Committee, photos of members to illustrate different backgrounds and cultures.
This is a good opportunity to promote MAC when recruiting new members in future.
The pamphlet will be translated into five different languages in accordance with Council policy.
The translation of the pamphlet into additional languages will need to be carefully considered based
on available funding.
Recommendation:
THAT a draft multi-lingual pamphlet promoting the Multicultural Advisory Committee and multicultural
programs be brought back to the Committee for consideration.
Proposed Restructure of Citizens of the Year Awards Program
The current structure of our Citizen of the Year awards is being reviewed to reduce the number of
sub-categories. An award for Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Citizen of
the Year is being suggested.
Between now and early in January 2010, the current guidelines and selection process will be
reviewed and revised preparation for the next Citizens of the Year Awards.

of the Citizen of the Year Awards program.
