Re: Strategies for inclusiveness in schools for parents from Culturally Diverse backgrounds

Hallo! Kath,

I am a Pacific Islander and I worked with the Catholic Schools and professionals who needed my support in PI ISSUES in Sydney. I have always worked in the Private sector as a consultant with children and families on different issues.
My background is Accounting and Counselling. The Catholic schools that I work with adopt similar support in their schools. The Sudanese, Korean, Chinese and some of the emerging communities do the same as us. We share opinions and we participate in local schools activities, local multicultural and general community issues and connected with our local council and other Non profit organisation. We are auspice by Riverwood Community centre and we participate in all their activities and training. It is not only enjoyable but it is a huge learning. We enjoy all workshops, training, activities and we go to the schools and the school participate on all the community functions during school days. It worked very well.

It is tough working with the Multicultural communities especially if you have no idea of their cultures, tradition and values. Once you get connected you are on.

COMPLICATED ISSUES RAISED BY AUTHORITIES, UNIVERSITIES, COMMUNITY LEADERS, LOCAL COUNCIL, SPORT LEADERS, SCHOOLS, AND the Culturally Diverse Background and my PACIFIC ISLANDERS COMMUNITY take me to where I am to day. THE PROFESSIONALS, WHO HAVE DEALT WITH PARENTS AND CHILDREN WITH THE MANY ISSUES OF PACIFIC ISLANDERS come together and we decided to do something about it. We work as partnership we WORK ON WAYS TO BRING THESE ISSUES supporting children, parents, service providers to get results. We work to provide service for the children of to day and ALSO the children of TOMORROW. We try to bring some light to the future of our Pacific Islanders Community. In your case you WORK CLOSELY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THESE COMMUNITIES and you are almost there.

IT IS BEST TO CONTACT SOMEONE WHO in the eyes of their community is trusted. In their capacity as a specialist on their particular field, qualified, Skilled AND SOMEONE WHO IS WELL RESPECTED BY their community and who can deliver. Working with the Multicultural communities is hard work but it is rewarding. WE MUST SACRIFICE TO TAKE THESE COMMUNITIES TO THE NEXT LEVEL by encouraging them to participate and to contribute to get results for their children.

A parent must be aware that it is their duty of care to get involve in their children activities at school. If it is language barriers your organisation must set up a English classes to help them understand. Encourage the children to help their parents to get more involved. Children love to help their parents and vice versa. Once they are introduced and
benefited the outcome, they love the idea.

Our PISSAM PROGRAM BRING PACIFIC ISLANDERS SPECIALIST ON Their professional AREAS. They work with the schools, with our Pacific Islanders we have a Education PHD Researcher based in the Catholic University, who worked with 7 Pacific Islanders Students in school and the community. They work and IDENTIFY any NEEDS of the children and parents. The students, parents, teachers and the PISSAM PROGRAM WORKED ON THE ISSUES TO GET A SOLUTION AND RESULTS.

TO BRING A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THE PARTICULAR COMMUNITY YOU ARE WORKING WITH. YOU HAVE TO BE as specific as possible in the initial phases of having your identified on the need area you wish to work in, it is now important to follow this through with fairly detailed research AND documented. This research should be aimed not only at factual information in the need area, but also should examine other services who are funded to provide services of a similar nature, as well as the feelings of any individuals, groups or communities who will be affected by the service you provide.

With my experience in the past. If we do not get the community concern involve with the relevant grassroots and appropriate inclusive cultural people in that community, not much will get solved or achieved. They must be connected to the problem to understand their own culture and values.

Contact appropriate skilled specialist of the particular groups for reactions and their support. In general, know what you are doing and what you are up against before you start dealing with the variety of issues./or support.
For instance my Pacific Islanders Youth are identified as HIGH NEEDS almost similar to the Aboriginal Youths or even worst.

Pacific migrant communities have distinguished special needs to improve their education, social, health, housing and community development.

With our project we have to produce some ambitious goals, aims and what to achieve.

PISSAM Program is aimed to bring positive awareness, hope, prosperity free of fear and a focus to go forward on any of the children and parent's strengths.

We must seize the opportunity that we are prepared to work hard to provide Professionals, relevant and appropriate services to Pacific Islanders by Pacific Islanders for those who have lost in the storms or have missed the bus.
Or else, put simply, we will only get worst and if never given that opportunity.
To set the PISSAM Program in place, in actions and filling those gaps would be much better, actions and words will be better than doing nothing at all. I hope this little information will help in any way.

Hi Merarth,

Thanks for the opportunity; I am part of a multicultural organisation that runs a lot of projects. Different community runs their own program under the umbrella of the organisation and we are auspice by Riverwood Community Centre. We united on annual various celebrations, forums, and group program. We are also link to one another across Canterbury Local Council. There are 156 voices united to one powerful voice. We are very lucky what we do are supported and sponsored by Canterbury Council, HOUSING NSW and others.

We do many forums and celebrate annual events where we invite the community leaders, government and non government representatives, stakeholders, service providers, parents, schools and senior citizens to participate. We believe in making them aware of the needs of the community and what we wanted from the service they provide. In this way they come to realise that these are the needs and the gaps that they have to address and action to get results. They have to provide those needs and that is the solution. Each community and schools perform at our events. We share the enjoyment, excitement and it is very educational, entertaining and it promotes understanding of the different culture and it brings peace and harmony. It connected us to all the community and it save time, share knowledge and most of all the right connections who where for the right contacts instead of going round and round like it is ongoing.

We always attracted over 500 hundred people in our celebrations and over one hundred people when we have forums. We selected the venue very carefully, a venue to be easily accessed by the guests close by public transport, the catering, organise interpreters, we send out invitation letters with the Agendas to all our members, we targeted people in social housing, we targeted children and parents, agencies, and the lists will go on. Each area a person is in charge and to make sure that their areas are well informed and will be the contact person.

With our forums, events we have a steering committee and we pick topics and do a research asking our members to pick topics that interest them on services that they felt there is a need which is affecting their everyday life. These were the topics that the majority wanted. We then find speakers to do talks on the services they provide.

Our oganisation will be running a forum on the 29th of October at Burwood RSL. We have picked 5 topics, so we are inviting Law Access & Legal Aid, Age Care, Housing NSW, The police, Mental Health. From past experiences the community and our members will attend and will participate if the topics are any interest or will benefit them. These topics were selected after consultations, with members and finalised by the steering committee. We are looking forward to this day.

On the day of the forum or any celebration the steering committee members are allocated with roles to make sure that the day runs smoothly. Two people take care of each role. The registrations are very important, so two people are allocated to this role to welcome the guests and after signing the attendance book they show them their seats and gave them the agenda. We felt that this role is very important. Some guests will get lost if not welcome. We also advertised on our local paper, local radio, word of mouth, and organised transport to bring people from Inner West, St George, Sutherland and Eastern Suburbs and not forgetting our local Canterbury areas.

Depending on the audience. It's very important to invite grass roots specialists in their capacity to talk and represented the professional body they belong to and represented their community (organisations) involved - for instance an indigenous lawyer from law access or a Arabic Director of Nursing, or a Chinese doctor who can converse, speak and understand the audiences especially when it is time for questions. Our organisation is for the general community but 90% multicultural. We are lucky in Australia that most professionals are born in Australia and can speak other languages as well.

This professional service is integral to the work of the whole Community with all experts and experienced in areas like doctors, counsellors, teachers, lawyers, trained nurse, community and Welfare Workers. Key issues that these service providers and workers who deal with the whole community in need. These are the areas of education, health, legal, child protection, early intervention, youth suicide prevention, needs of the aged, mental health, homeless and domestic violence.

Special attention and all been urged for all service providers to better understand Indigenous' tradition and culture when dealing with their issues. I encourage and believe that understanding Indigenous Aboriginal, Pacific Islanders and others culture will help service providers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, counsellors, authorities provide better treatment and diagnose right medicine, cure to indigenous aboriginal, Pacific Islanders and other Australians to get better outcome. To provide right services, right cure and to take prevention and to the target to get results.

Every forum should be encouraged to clearly define roles within the agency, service providers, non-profit organisation including the responsibilities and accountabilities of each role Implements evaluation and feedback mechanisms to ensure continual improvement of service and to hit the target that it aims for.
