SADLY THE GOOD WORK OF SR JO & MERCY SISTERS HAS COME TO AN END.  YOU CAN READ FOR YOURSELF WHAT SR JO HAVE TO SAY.  SR JO HAS MADE HUGE DIFFERENCES ACROSS CANTERBURY AND BEYOND. I AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN THERE HOW SHE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO ACCOMODATE FOR THE MOST VULNERBLES IN SOCIETY, THE MOST NEED INDEED. WE HAVE BEEN THERE ALONGSIDE HER AND HAVE SEEN HOW SR JOE BUILD ST MARY' HOUSE FROM GROUND LEVEL.

I  RECEIVE  A  CHRISTMAS CARD FROM SR JOE! JUST  LIKE HUNDREDS OF SERVICE PROVIDERS AND OTHERS WHO WE HAVE STOOD TOGETHER TO MAKE DIFFERENCES TO THE LESS FORTUNATE.

SR JO'S CARD WAS SO MUCH DIFFERENT AND STOOD OUT FROM THE REST.  IT BROKE  MY HEART. I EMAILED SR JO HOW I FELT IN SUPPORT OF HER HARD WORK AND ITS CAUSE OF HER DUTY OF CARE TO THE COMMUNITY THAT DRASTICALLY COME TO THE END AND NOT BECAUSE SHE GAVE UP IT IS:  REFER TO HER  ARTICLE (TORCH) JULY 23 2009

Dear Sister Joe,

Thank you for your Christmas
card for 2009

It is sad that St Mary's House is closing down. The needy people across Canterbury will suffer and it will make it worse for those in need.

I am very disappointed, it seems that there are billions of dollars given away to a lot of the agencies by this current government. I can't see how St Mary's House did not have a cent out of it. I am confused, devastated and in tears IN ST MARY'S HOUSE CLOSING DOWN.  The 3 levels of Government have not come to rescue St Mary's House. It's really food for thought for more advocating and more telling the 3 levels of government that the needy and the vulnerables should be a no 1 priority. Well the NEW NSW PREMIER'S priority in her first speech to the public said that is one of her priority to look after those in needs..

Well Sister Jo you have done your best of your best to meet the needy and vulnerable a second chance in life. The PISSAM network, Canterbury Harmony group Inc.  and the IWATC acknowledged and appreciated that.  You see that! I see that! those who have supported your empowering services, see that! and sadly those who come to you as a last resort see that. Where they will go? Yes! to other service providers who do not even know them. I remember on Mondays, there is a lady who comes in just about lunch time, just to chat and have biscuits and a cuppa.  She said to me, Anne I look forward coming to see Sr Jo, this is my only family. She is on her own and she said that St Mary's House was the only place she felt at home. I just imagine the impact on her? Well it will not only her, I know hundreds and hundreds of people will be having the same filling. Putting them in misery, confused and their lost of hope where to turn to in time of need. It will put them them in more horrors as I have experience with a lot of Pacific Islanders CALD who have come to you in the past and whom we are supporting to give them opportunities that are available to them.

Let us pray, reflect and remember each other in fighting to make a difference to those in need.  The government and those in power should know that you do not have to have a title or in a powerful position to make a difference to those in need. All you need is to provide a service that will meet their need, end of the Story.  Response, Prevention, Action and to get an outcome are much much better than powerful words and more reviewing and more reviewing. The concrete evidence are there.

I have learn a lot from your patience, passion and guidance and it will be with me while I am working with my community.

Merry Christmas and have a prosperous new year

Love & Prayers

Board Builder Conference 2009

Practical Renewal : Positive Results : Better Board Performance

The leading national conference for community boards, committees and governing councils

Friday 27 November, 2009

The Conference

Community groups come in all shapes and sizes, from grassroots groups meeting around a kitchen table to highly structured organisations with large budgets and a professional workforce.

What all these groups have in common is their passion for their cause.

But passion alone is not enough to provide good stewardship - modern community boards, whatever their size or style, need to be adaptable, knowledgeable and responsible.

The Board Builder conference provides the opportunity to reflect, learn, network and identify strategies for practical renewal of your board.

This is the conference for all people who sit on a board, manage a board, work with a board, or want to get on a board.

The Program*

Keynote Presentations

  • Finding New Blood: Taking a Fresh Look at Board Recruitment
Kirsten Deane, President, Down Syndrome Association of Victoria (How to get consumers onto your board)
Bec Brown, Chair, C31 (How to get young people onto your board)
Hutch Hussein, Manager, Advocacy, Innovation & Marketing Unit, Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre (How to get people from multicultural backgrounds onto your board)
Murray Baird, Senior Partner, Moores Legal (How to get business people onto your board)

If there's one thing that pretty much every community group board wants and needs, it's new talent. In this dynamic session you will learn where to find new blood, how to get your newbies to hit the ground running and some of the surprising results you might expect from welcoming newcomers into the fold.

  • Peeking around Corners: What's Next for the Australia Community Sector
Senator The Honourable Ursula Stephens, Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector

The past few years has seen an unprecedented upswing in Federal Government interest in the Australian community sector. In this keynote presentation, Senator Ursula Stephens will outline what's in store for the community sector over the next 12 months, report on progress of the National Compact and launch the search for the 2010 Westpac Outstanding Community Treasurers.

  • One Size Fits All? Trying governance models on for size
Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes OAM, Director, The Australian Centre of Philanthropy and Nonprofits Studies, QUT
There are seemingly as many governance models as there are community groups. No two groups work in exactly the same way. In this keynote address, Australia's foremost expert on community governance reveals which models work best and how you can get your governance group really humming. Plus hear about the latest developments in community governance innovations, including the standard Chart of Accounts project.

  • The Board Doctor
    Kate Caldecott, Director, Our Community
    Patrick Moriarty, Director, Our Community
Catherine Brown, Principal Consultant, Catherine Brown & Associates
Kathy McLean, Executive Search Consultant, Fish & Nankivell Ogilvie Watson
Facilitated by Brett de Hoedt, Mayor, Hootville Communications
Revealing the answers to all the burning questions you have about community governance. Tell us about your board ills and let our Board Doctors work their magic.

Five concurrent sessions (you choose ONE)

  1. Getting Back to Basics
    Kate Caldecot, Director, Our Community
Are you thinking of joining a board for the first time? Been on a board for a while but not quite sure what your role is? Want some clarity on what a board should do and how it should run? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, this is the session for you.

  2. Resolving Conflict
Patrick Moriarty, Director of Training & Development, Our Community
Need help getting the dormouse to contribute, toning down the troublemaker, or moving on the "board corpse"? This session will provide pointers for dealing with some of the more common sources of conflict on community boards.

  3. Future Proofing your Organisation
Catherine Brown, Principal Consultant, Catherine Brown & Associates
Future proofing your organisation requires a willingness to take a critical look at the status quo and a desire to bring into focus what lies ahead. In this session you will learn why planning is important and what a functional planning process might look like.

  4. Minding the Money
Sinclair Taylor, Head of Westpac Financial Education
It's all very well for the Treasurer to be on top of the finances, but how about everyone else? How much do you know about the health of your group's finances, really? In this session you will learn how to gain a deeper understanding of the core financial drivers that affect your group.

  5. Supporting the CEO
Kathy McLean, Executive Search Consultant, Fish & Nankivell Ogilvie Watson
A critical task for any board that governs an organisation with staff is to recruit, supervise and support the CEO. In this session you will learn how to find the right person to head up your organisation and how to make sure they are given the right support they need to deliver results..

Aboriginal housing: $8m went to management firm

A public hearing has heard more than $8 million of Commonwealth money was paid to a company to manage the roll-out of a massive Indigenous housing scheme in the Northern Territory.

The Strategic Indigenous Housing and Infrastructure Program dominated today's Council of Territory Cooperation, which was meeting for the first time.

The public hearings were agreed to earlier this year as part of a deal between the Henderson Government and the independent MLA Gerry Wood.

The chief executive of the Department of Local Government and Housing, David Richie, told the committee 20 consultants were initially hired to help roll-out the program.

He said one company was in charge of project management and was paid $8.2 million.

Following a review of the program, there are now 10 consultants working with Government, he said.

The hearing has heard not one house has been completed since the $672 million program was announced in 2007.

Public homes bulldozed under housing plan

The Federal Opposition says the Government has demolished more public housing units than it has built under its economic stimulus package.

The Government announced in February it would spend almost $5.5 billion building new social housing and refurbishing other homes.

The Opposition's housing spokesman, Scott Morrison, says as of late last month only 73 new houses had been completed.

But he says hundreds have been demolished to make way for new homes.

"The Government needs to be accountable for this spending, they need to tell people what is being done, they need to know how many houses they're knocking down, and they need to be able to justify that this is value for money," he said.

"There are very serious questions now being raised about how many homes will end up being delivered."

But Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek says more than 2,500 homes are under construction and thousands of others have been refurbished.

"Where homes are being knocked down the properties were in such poor condition that they were sitting vacant in many cases for years," she said.

"The repairs and maintenance part of this program has been successful, it has exceeded our expectations, and the new building part of this program is absolutely on track to meet our target of 75 per cent of these new homes to be completed by the end of next year."

She says more than 19,000 new homes will be built under the package.
