Sadly the Youth Allowance deadlock sparks drop-out fears:  Our youths are our future:

Universities Australia says the course drop-out rate for first-year students is bound to rise if the Government's Youth Allowance changes remain locked in the Senate.

Figures from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations show that close to one in five students drop out in their first year.

Glenn Withers from Universities Australia says that figure is up slightly on recent years, and says it will continue to rise unless the Senate can overcome the deadlock and pass the Government's Youth Allowance changes next year.

"We definitely predict that, and we have actual empirical evidence from international analysis of how student services support and income support actually improve completion rates and especially so for the less well-off," he said.

The Impact of cutting youth's allowances:

The PISSAM program has been contacted by many, children, youth and parents that cutting the youth allowances is an insult on children and parents who are struggling to keep going.  Some parents spend more than half of their income in paying mortgages & rent. Some spend the other half on food, bills and hardly anything left. They are suffering and some parents have no choice but to kick their children out on the street.  Some students said they cannot study full time because they will end up on the street and they just cannot perform with their busy schedule with their study knowing that they cannot carry on.
