Tongatapu's rich history

The archaeologically rich area of Lapaha on the eastern side of the main island of Tongatapu offers the largest terraced tombs (langi) in the South Pacific. There are several cleared sites that guides will take you to visit, explaining the rich history of the Tongan Kings.

About five miles further along the north point of Tongatapu is the hugely impressive trilithon of Ha'amonga 'A Maui. This ancient trilithon is a massive 12-ton stone archway made from three single limestone slabs.

How they got there and what it was used for is uncertain but two of the more creditable theories are a gateway to the Royal Gardens or a shrine for observing the seasons. Other similar but smaller structures can be found within the Kingdom's ancient empire.

These attractions are included in our island day trips.

Mary MacKillop

The miracle involved the healing of a person who had cancer and was cured after praying to Blessed Mary. (AAP Image)

Australia will have its first Roman Catholic saint after Pope Benedict approved a decree recognising a second miracle attributed to the intercession of Mother Mary MacKillop.

The approval means Blessed Mary is likely to be formally declared a saint at a canonisation ceremony next year.

Blessed Mary (1842-1909), who founded the Sisters of Saint Joseph, is revered by Catholics for her work, especially with needy children, former female prisoners and prostitutes.

She was beatified by pope John Paul II in 1995.

The miracle approved on Saturday involved the healing of a person who had cancer and was cured after praying to Blessed Mary.

Sister Anne Derwin from the Sisters of Saint Joseph says many have been inspired by Blessed Mary's work in education and with the poor.

"It's not only the sisters, but many other people, men and women, who love the way Mary MacKillop lived her life," she said.

"They try and live in that spirit too, and do great things for people."

Sister Derwin says the Pope's decision is a significant event for the church in Australia.

"Mary herself wouldn't have expected this sort of limelight, but it makes us feel excited that the gift she was given for the church, for the world, is being recognised as valuable," Sister Derwin said.

"And that was a gift to focus on those most in need in our society."

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne, worked throughout South Australia and died in North Sydney.

She co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866 but was excommunicated from the Church at one stage for allegedly disobeying authorities.

However she continued to spend her life caring for those less fortunate.

Venerable John Paul II

Meanwhile, the late pope, John Paul II, has also moved closer to sainthood, as his successor approved a decree recognising that he had lived the Christian faith heroically.

The Vatican said Pope Benedict had signed the "heroic virtues" decree, a key step in the procedure by which the Church recognises its saints, after a recommendation by a Vatican panel of experts.

The late pope will now have the title "venerable".

The following step will now be the recognition of a miracle attributed to John Paul II, who died in 2005.

That is expected to happen early next year, meaning the late pope can be beatified, the final step before sainthood.

In John Paul II's case, the miracle under consideration - and subject to another papal decree - involves a French nun who was cured of Parkinson's disease in 2005.

Vatican watchers expect Benedict to approve the beatification, which could be celebrated next year, either on the April 2 anniversary of his death or in October on the anniversary of the start of John Paul II's papacy in 1978.

Pope Benedict also declared controversial wartime pontiff Pius XII venerable, putting him on the road to beatification despite controversy over his role during World War II, when many historians say he remained passive while Nazi Germany killed millions of Jews.

The beatification of Father Jerzy Popieluszko, the "Solidarity chaplain" who was murdered by the Polish secret service in 1984, has also been approved.

The decree places the charismatic priest, a staunch anti-communist who laced his sermons with political messages, on the path to sainthood.

Because he is considered a martyr, Father Popieluszko's beatification dossier did not require evidence of a miracle.

Mary MacKillop's town prepares for pilgrims

A small town in South Australia is preparing to welcome thousands more pilgrims, after Pope Benedict approved a decree that will see Mary MacKillop become the country's first Roman Catholic saint.

The decree recognises a second miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Mary (1842-1909), which involved the healing of a person who had cancer and was cured after prayer.

She is likely to be formally declared a saint at a canonisation ceremony next year.

The announcement has been well-received in the small town of Penola, in south-east SA, where Mary MacKillop co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866.

Her work there involved setting up a school to provide free education to isolated bush children and to help former female prisoners and prostitutes.

Set in the heart of South Australia's Coonawarra wine-making region, Penola currently draws about 20,000 tourists and pilgrims each year.

But Claire Larkin from the town's Mary MacKillop Centre says Penola's 1,200 residents are now preparing for many more.

"Everyone in Penola is very excited about the news. They're all supportive and we all benefit, the town benefits," she said.

She says they have been waiting for this day for a long time.

"Particularly in the last 14 years since Mary was beatified, we've been praying for it," she said.

Locals say the announcement has increased their sense of pride, but they do not see the town changing.

"I can't see it getting glitzy, or having shops with lots of artefacts," one Penola resident said.

"It's always been a great community spirit here and this will probably enhance it."

Wattle Range Councillor Glenn Brown says the town is now preparing to become a major drawcard for Catholic pilgrims and tourists alike.

"I think it presents Penola with a wonderful opportunity to be recognised throughout Australia and throughout the world as a place for pilgrims to come and enjoy the history that's here, the heritage but also the other tourism aspects that the town offers," he said.

The local council is seeking advice from a consultant to develop a business plan that will help cater for the expected influx of visitors, with improvements to town amenities and gardens.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann says Mary MacKillop has a special attachment to many parts of the state.

"There is a special association with South Australia," he said.

"I think that is going to be terrific for pilgrimages coming to places like Norwood, down to Penola and the south-east.

"Mary MacKillop, in the 19th century, was the shining symbol of social justice in Australia.

"She was someone who was prepared to stand up to church authorities to do the right thing by the poor."

'Significant breakthrough'

Australia's ambassador to the Vatican Tim Fischer says the Pope's official recognition of a second miracle is significant for both religious and non-religious Australians.

He says it is a significant breakthrough.

"Some Australians may be cynical," he said.

"But she was an extraordinary Australian on the spiritual front, the saintly front, but also in help of unfortunate women coming out of prison, help of poor people seeking education for their children, especially in South Australia."

He says it is now just a matter of the Pope setting a date for canonisation.

"Mary Mackillop has cleared with flying colours the last hurdle this weekend in Rome," he said.

"It's terrific news. She's there, but the procedures will roll forward."

THE TREE OF LIFE THE COCONUT TREE.  LET US PLAT A TREE OF LIFE HERE IN CANTERBURY AND BEYOND

Sikimeti family members.jpg Regan Buckland and his Aunty Peta Lolesio Sikimeti @ ''Apifo'ou College

I was very impressed by the life of the coconut tree. It gave the Pacific Islanders life.  I will let someone else who has grown up in the Pacific Nations to talk about how coconut tree gave life in many forms to Pacific Islanders. One Tongan elderly man said to me in Tonga.  It is Coconut alone will give life even if there is nothing on the Island but as long as coconut trees are there life will continue.  I said to him, it sounds like God.  He responded yeah: We can see coconut but we cannot see God.  I left Tonga to Australia with those strong words.  Let us united to take our Pacific Islanders Community to the next level.  I would like to say that:

PART TONGAN/PART AUSTRALIAN                                        BY REGAN BUCKLAND

Family and Friends

Alana always reflected on how beautiful the flowers in the Pacific. There you are guys! I went to the Pacific Island (Tonga) to tough up myself in the hope to be a footy player, and my aim was to be a football star! like Fuifui Moimoi/Jarrad Hayne/Israel Folau or my friend Chase Stanly. I came back and I am not a football star but I have learn and make a choice to focus on my education to achieve my goal and guarantee a future for myself, my future generation and to make a difference to my Pacific Islander Community.

My journey was confused, in doubt and I enjoyed the blessing that given to me byTongan elders and friends.  After I have been through it comes down that my future was right here in Australia.  I have learn from my dream, my ambition, my life journey to my ancestors' land. My experience was awesome and it came down that the main thing my journey was just a beginning of my life and tons of learning of what are my chances and my choices that will suit the life that I will enjoy.

Family and Friends

I also learn from one of my fellow tutor, Alana, She told these group of year 10, 11 and year 12 students that life really starts at 35, so if anyone in their journeys all of a sudden have change directions, do not give up.  It is never too late for a change.  Looking around Alana said amongst us she knew that one 58 and 56 years old people amongst us who still study at University to update their skills or doing researches to make a difference to the community.  So never in our life anyone is too old for anything as long as we put in our all! Regardless any challenges, we will get there.  For some it might take a bit longer and for some it will be quicker, still we will eventually get there. Alana said that Education will give us the opportunities in many levels in the community to get where we want to be.

Alana herself was born in Australia to both parents who were private students in the late sixties and late seventies but return to Tonga due to her Dad, a ship captain and he was based in the South Pacific. The family decided to move to Tonga where it was more central to their father’s work.  Alana’s family live in Tonga for 2 years and moved back to Sydney. Alana herself attended Primary School in Tonga.  Alana knew Tonga very well the cultures and also spoke Tongan fluently.  Alana always reflected on how beautiful the flowers in the Pacific. Alana said that putting together all the Pacific Nations flowers from the South Pacific transforming them and mixing with the waratah flower and the coconut leaves make her life complete.  All she needed now to water and look after the waratah flowers with tender loving care.  Alana reminded all Pacific Islanders  CHILDREN, youths, parents and people let us united in planting education as a simple of the coconut tree (tree of life) in all levels within our lives in our whole community's life by doing what we should be doing, good planning, disciplining ourselves, set targeting goals, working hard, believing in God,  the right energy and we will, action.  Keep going and by doing them right. Leaving our Pacific Nation behind, the journey begins, the journey of Pacific Islanders life in Australia.

Leaving our Island home as we progress on our journey as our Life begin in Australia

Things will change; we must accept change, slowly, surely and eventually getting there

Encouraging the participation of young Pacific Islanders people and their families in decisions which affect their lives and their local community.  We can be united in doing various tasks to be carried out in consultation with the PISSAM NETWORK Management Committee and Manager to ensure a comprehensive service is provided to Pacific Islanders young people of Canterbury and beyond.  24hrs access to Pacific Islanders people with their many issues,   and people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background and emerging communities shall be promoted, addressed to the limit.

Canterbury's deputy Mayor Karl Saleh doesn't just believe in helping people living in the Canterbury area.

He also believes in helping the mutlicultural community within the whole of Australia

And his hard work in creating programs that would assist tenants who can't speak English recently earned him the 2008 NSW Australasian Housing Institute's inspirational colleague award.

The west ward councillor, who has been working for three years as the multicultural access program coordinator for the Riverwood Tenant Resource Service said he was delighted to receive the prestigious award.

"The award is in recognition for my commitment to culture and harmony,"he said.

"I ran the Multicultural Access Program which gets people from different ethnicities to volunteer their time and help tenants.

"I also organised a Harmony Day event as well as a night event for them."

Mr Saleh said he saw the award as a tribute to our diverse multicultural community.

"We are priviledged to be able to bring about real change in the communities because all our work is carried out in partnership with our grassroots resident communities," he said.

"If you ask me what I intend to do after receiving this award I could say that I intend to continue the work I have been doing and continue to make a difference."

ABOUT 100 Housing NSW tenants from Punchbowl and the Inner West joined their Muslim neighbours for an iftar dinner as part of the holy month of Ramadan last week.

The event was hosted by the Canterbury Harmony Group and Punchbowl Multicultural Tenants Group, with the support of Canterbury City Council and Housing NSW, to celebrate the month of fasting and interfaith harmony. Dr Zachariah Matthews from Punchbowl’s Australian Islamic Mission (AIM) began the feast with an explanation of the daily religious obligations practiced by Muslims.

Canterbury deputy mayor and head of the Multicultural Access Program at Riverwood’s Tenant Resource Service Karl Saleh, said this is the fourth year they hosted the event and again it was a success.

“Those attending the dinner left feeling not only content from having enjoyed a wonderful meal but with a new warmth that comes from making friends,” he said.

Cr SalehRAPID advances in technolog>y mean that many people update their electronic equipment regularly.

To ensure that no more electrical items will join the toxic swamp at the local tip, Canterbury Deputy Mayor Karl Saleh has initiated a local e-waste drop-off service.

"I believe that there is a strong need to protect our environment, particularly in current times," Cr Saleh said.

"We have a collection for chemical waste, why not electronic items as well?

"Many people are looking to replace their old analog TVs with new plasmas and there are no services to address this."

Cr Saleh realised the need for an e-waste disposal service when residents expresses their problems with trying to dispose of unwanted goods.

"I have received so many calls from my neighbours and residents asking how they can get rid of computers and televisions," he said.

"It's unhealthy for the environment to just throw them in with the normal garbage and residents know that."

Research shoes that household electronic equipment contains significant amounts of toxic substances such as mercury and lead.

When not properly discarded, they can leach into landfill sites and pose serious environmental hazards.

"To reduce the burden on the environment, the council recommends looking at other options before throwing equipment away such as passing it on to friends or family, or hosting a garage sale," Cr Saleh said.

"There are also a range of re-use and local charity organisations that accept second-hand goods and used televisions which are working and meet certain criteria."

Residents will soon be able to safely dispose of old television sets, computers, video recorders, stereos and other electronic goods.

A venue has yet to be announced.

Ray White Punchbowl real estate agent, Donna Michalakis“Canterbury Council had started to spend some money in the area, which will boost property values and rental prices - great news for keen investors”.

“The area isn’t over-developed like Bankstown is!”

Ray White Punchbowl real estate agent, Donna Michalakis, pictured right.

IT’S official: Punchbowl and Lakemba have been named Sydney’s best investment suburbs and hundreds of people want in.

Trouble is, the demand to buy far outweighs the supply of homes on the market.

Rental yields of up to 7.4 per cent, thanks to low property prices and strong rents, pushed the often-troubled Sydney suburb into the top spot, according to RP Data and BRW magazine.

Ray White Punchbowl real estate agent, Donna Michalakis, said the area had major potential for growth and development.

“Punchbowl is multiculturally diverse, centrally located, close to major amenities, between two major shopping centres on a good train line - but affordability is the key factor,” Mrs Michalakis said.

“Prices are rising so much and it is costing too much to rent in higher-class areas.”

RP Data Research Director Tim Lawless said Punchbowl featured on the list because a lot of people had their sights fixed on the area.

“Punchbowl and Lakemba were both listed amongst 18 Sydney metropolitan suburbs where it is now on average cheaper to buy a home than rent one,” he said.

Mrs Michalakis said first-home buyers had cleaned out the property market since the first-home owner’s grant was doubled in September last year.

“A lot of properties have been snapped up by first-home buyers in the area because they are getting places for such a good price and in such a convenient location,” she said. “But there’s definitely scope for investors and families as well. Punchbowl has been relatively untouched compared to other suburbs like Bankstown and there is a lot of opportunity for growth.”

The realtor said Canterbury Council had started to spend some money in the area, which will boost property values and rental prices - great news for keen investors.

“The area isn’t over-developed like Bankstown is - it has been an untouched gem waiting to be polished for such a long time,” Mrs Michalakis said.

The Canterbury Harmony Group and the Punchbowl Multicultural Tenants Group came together to organise the day’s events.

Canterbury Deputy Mayor Karl Saleh said the day was important for residents. “It is important to come together and share the opportunity to get to know each other better and deeper,” he said.

Cr Saleh said the occasion brought together different cultural groups from across the area.

It also helped to foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect among residents, he said.

About 12 different cultural groups participated in this year’s celebrations.

These included Chinese, Korean and Arabic community groups.

But the city’s celebrations did not end with Harmony Day. National Youth Week was also in full swing last week. Bankstown City Council, in conjunction with the Bankstown Youth Development Service (BYDS), held events such as the Bankstown’s got talent competition, hosted by Casey Donovan, and the Make A Move writing competition.

Youth Week organiser Justine Foo said it was important to realise the value young people had to offer to the community.

Earthworks Certificate Presentation - Carrington Centre, Campsie

On the 3rd of  March 2009 I was honoured to represent  our Mayor, and State Member for Lakemba, Cr Robert Furolo at the Earthworks Certificate Presentation at Carrington Centre, Campsie.

The graduates of this course, are amongst 120 people who have now completed the course.

Earthworks program it’s not just about putting shopping in reusable bags, rather than plastic. It’s also about composting, saving water and energy.

Reusing products or goods, recycling and of course – avoiding waste in the first place.

One of the best things about the Earthworks program is learning some of the natural cleaning tips – which aren’t costly.  They are simple and most often readily available in your cupboard.

Plus they are much better for the environment than chemical products – which we don’t even know what half of them are.

I hope the graduates of this course continue to use and apply the things  they have learnt through the  course.

But, also to educate others on how they can save the environment and money by just changing a few of their daily habits.

I also encourage  all residents to take part in some of our other environmental and waste initiatives and programs including, our tree planting days and recycling tours.

Community volunteers across Canterbury Local Government Areas turned up to lend a hand and conducted an excited rubbish collection as part of the annual Clean up Australia  Day on Sunday, March 1.

Before starting the clean up, volunteers received a safety briefing from the site supervisor then it was armed with gloves and garbage bags, they began their assault on the rubbish.

“A total of twenty bagfuls of litter  were collected,  waste and recyclables consisting mostly of drink bottles and cans and also plastic bags from Endeavour place -Riverwood and Punchbowl Park this year” Deputy Mayor Councillor Karl Saleh said.

"It was great to see so many community volunteers turn up on the day,” Councillor said.

There were a few new faces this year along with the same band of volunteer workers, we have each year, generally, a good support from the community this year.” Clr Saleh added.

Punchbowl Park Site Coordinator Rana Saleh said, “We as a community are  developing a greater awareness of the importance of our surroundings and our urgent need to protect our environment .

2008 Australasian Housing Institute Award
News item - 19/12/2008

Canterbury Deputy Mayor Cr Karl Saleh has been awarded the 2008 Australasian housing institute inspirational colleague state award.

In recognition of the valuable work he has displayed and the commitment to cultural harmony, Clr. Saleh, who is also the Multicultural access program coordinator at the Riverwood’s Tenant Resource Service, was formally recognized for his hard work.

The Awards showcase social housing success stories in Australia and Newzealands and formally recognise excellence in professional practice, from the grass roots to the most senior levels.

“It is very rewarding to see the results that make a difference in people’s lives. I really see this award as a tribute to our diverse multicultural community and to the terrific job that the Riverwood community centre, Canterbury city council, housing NSW and local social housing tenant volunteers have done in our area, “ Mr., Saleh said.

Acting as a mentor to others engaged in social housing, such as staff employed at the centre or local social housing tenants, Mr. Saleh has developed and implemented a number of culturally specific and mainstream tenant groups.

The secret of his strategy, his belief that a community is all part of an extended family.

The Riverwood Australian Arabic Association (RAAA) held it's annual dinner to celebrate the year's achievements at Riverwood Community Centre recently.

The event is seen as a yearly opportunity to thank the local community for it's support and particularly those who volunteer their time and services for the Association.

During the event, certificates of appreciation were presented to Association members for their contributions to the Association.

"It has been a good 10 years and we have been privileged to have had the opportunity to work with and for the community, but we have a lot left to do and we will continue to work together to achieve even more for our community," said the Association's chairperson, Cr Karl Saleh.

The function was also attended by Banks MP Daryl Melham and Canterbury Mayor Robert Furolo.

The Riverwood Australian Arabic Association was established in 1996 to work in partnership with Riverwood Community Centre and Canterbury City Council towards addressing the needs and issues of the Arabic speaking community in local areas.

Canterbury Councillor Karl Saleh attended a candlelight vigil in the city last Wednesday for the 21 South Korean aid workers held hostage in Afganistan by Taliban forces.

Members of Campsie's Korean Society network joined Cr Saleh in taking part in the moving ceremony on the steps of the Town Hall, offering prayers for the workers' safe return.

"I am pleased to see tonight a gathering of Christians and Muslims, Koreans and Middle Eastern and all other nationalities standing here shoulder to shoulder and hand to hand calling for tolerance, and peace for the sake of a peaceful end to this crisis," Cr Saleh said in an address to the crowd.

Cr Saleh said the gathering not only reflected Australian qualities of tolerance and peace but also the pride of residents of the City of Canterbury as a strong multicultural community.

He said more than 120 nationalities were represented in the region, making it one of the most diverse cities in the State and one where many cultures had combined to create a single unique culture promoting mutual tolerance and respect.

A Harmony Day celebration is planned at Punchbowl Ex-Services Club this morning from 10am.

Those attending will be treated to a range of cultural performances from around the world, celebrating unity in diversity.

From the traditional dances of Fiji to Lebanese songs, the program is filled with little pieces of cultural pride brought together under the one banner of being Australian.

There will also be a special recital of the song 'We Are Australian' by the Padstow TAFE Multicultural Reading and Writing class that meets at Riverwood Community Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Canterbury Cr Karl Saleh encouraged all residents to attend the free event to show pride in their local community.

"Harmony Day is an opportunity to show how proud we are of our society and its diversity," Cr Saleh said.

"We're overwhelmed by the response already from our community. Be proud, be proud of your community and be proud to be Australian.

"It's our duty to encourage this sort of inspiration."

The event gets underway at Punchbowl Ex-Services Club, 1 The Broadway, from 10am. To reserve a seat, phone 9584 8473.

It now seems possible to experience the world in only a few hours.

Just ask those who attended the Harmony Day event held at Punchbowl Ex-Services Club last Wednesday, who were treated to musical and dance performances ranging from islands of Fiji and the forests of China to the valleys of Lebanon.

"It really showed the diversity of the City of Canterbury," said Canterbury Cr Karl Saleh.

"It was an opportunity for all the cultures to represent themselves and show how proud they are of the City they live in."

Prompt action by council
Courtesy of Torch Publishing - 15/11/2006

Until now, I guess like most people, I believed that the only way to get a hearing, when making a point or promoting an issue, with government departments or local councils, was by a show of strength - petitions with many signatures of support for the cause.

The single voice of a resident would never be heard, let alone acted upon. Well, I'd like to assure you, this just isn't so, well certainly NOT with Canterbury Council.

I had noted over a period of months that an intersection involving my street and a nearby very busy road had become a potential accident site, but not only for vehicles. As there was no concrete footpath in the immediate area, merely a very uneven, part dirt, grass track - impossible in wet weather - pedestrians, especially those with small children, trolleys, and the elderly walked on the road.

While approached by neighbours all agreed to my proposals, I didn't get written support. Hence, it was with a heavy heart and a sense of impending failure, that I spoke to councillor Karl Saleh (West Ward). With his guidance, and in fact, continued support and interest, I submitted my requests to the appropriate departments at Canterbury Council. Shortly after, I received a number of letters, closely followed by visits, from investigating officers, who noted the issues I had raised first hand.

As a result, temporary improvements were made to the walkway. Linemarkings, signs, etc. were installed to make the intersection safer. A letter was received confirming that costing for a concrete footpath had been done, with actual construction listed in the estimated 2007-08 budget.

So, to Canterbury Council, my sincere thanks. How lucky we are to have such a caring council which still believes that a single voice from the community is important.

Well done Canterbury Council.

>>Anzac Day 2007 -- For your tomorrow, we gave our today
Courtesy of Karl Saleh -- 25/4/2007

"ANZAC Day is one of Australia's most important occasions, Australia's most primary commemorative event  as it allows us to remember and recognise those who have stood before us to serve and protect Australia,"

It is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices our servicemen and women have made in defending the Australia we enjoy today.

We owe a great debt to these people. Many of them set off to war unsure if they would return, but strong in the belief that Australia was a country worth fighting for.

I Think is very important for all of us to remind ourselves of the inscriptions seen on war memorials around the world:

“When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.”

We all take lessons from the wars in which they have fought - and there are no lessons which less deserve to be forgotten.

Today is our chance to credit our servicemen and women - past and present - and let them know that their service is remembered, appreciated and honoured.
